Mother Melania (Salem) is the abbess of the community of Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga, California.
Mother Melania grew up in an Orthodox family in New Kensington, PA and attended St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church (New Kensington, PA). Her brother (Very Reverend John Salem) serves as a pastor in Oklahoma City, OK at St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Church. Mother Melania was tonsured at St. Barbara Monastery (Santa Paula, CA) before becoming superior and then abbess of Holy Assumption Monastery in Calistoga, CA.
She has written several series of children’s books (The Twelve Great Feasts for Children; The Three-Day Pascha; the Old Testament Stories for Children series; and the Good Neighbors series – a series of animal fables designed to teach children Christian virtue in an engaging way).
Mother Melania has made a particular study of St. John Chrysostom’s writings. Because he was writing not only to monks but to people living in the world, he has much practical advice to offer for today’s Christian.
Mother Melania will be giving two Keynote Addresses after Divine Liturgy on Thursday July 2, 2020 and Saturday July 4, 2020 (9:15-10:00 AM) on the Conference Theme: For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:17)
